Wait List: Supporting One, Supporting All: Collaborative Support Models for Inclusive Communities
Community Workshop
Facilitator(s): Dr Shelley Moore
Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm | Location: Virtual
The inclusive planning process is aiming to situate Disability as an identity, not a deficit, and so to determine what supports children require, teams are shifting to look at needs, instead of disabilities, as a reference point. In this way, planning for inclusive learning environments can be universal, and anticipate needs of everyone in a community. In this session we will connect to Universal Design for Learning principles and look at how we can plan for a child with a disability, in ways that can support many children in a community.

View Workshop DetailsWait List: PDA - What are Children Really Saying?
Community Workshop
Facilitator(s): Pam Collins
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm | Location: Virtual
Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a relatively new term for a profile of traits under the Autism umbrella. Autistic children often need extra support when processing requests or demands, especially for things that may be unfamiliar. Those with a PDA profile experience severe anxiety over similar situations but that can also include everyday ’demands’ such as hygiene, eating, dressing, and attending school. Parents and educators often hear “I can’t” and interpret it as “I won’t”. Let’s see what is really happening for these children, how they respond and how we can support them.
View Workshop DetailsWait List: Reframing Behaviour
Community Workshop
Facilitator(s): Monica Maddison
Time: 6:30pm - 8:30pm | Location: Virtual
This workshop will explore the idea of expected and unexpected behaviours, along with what behaviours are probable to occur at different stages - even though they may feel uncomfortable or unexpected for us educators. This workshop encourages educators to consider “upstairs brains” and “downstairs brains” when viewing children’s behaviour, the importance of co-regulation, and the idea that behaviour is communicative. If you have previously attended Monica's Functions of Behaviour workshop we hosted, this is a great follow up to that workshop.
